Sourdough Starter Mastery: Hands-On Workshop & Guided Coaching

Embark on a sourdough journey with our comprehensive Sourdough Starter Mastery class! Perfect for beginners and enthusiasts alike, this unique workshop offers both in-person and Zoom options, ensuring everyone can participate and learn.

Class Overview:

  • Session 1: Our hands-on workshop is designed to kickstart your sourdough adventure. Join us in person or via Zoom as we delve into the fascinating history of sourdough and the science behind starters. You'll learn what a starter is, the best flour choices, and how to incorporate added bacteria. We will discuss the pros and cons of making your own starter versus receiving one from someone else. This session sets the foundation for creating and nurturing a thriving starter.
  • 14-Day Coaching: Over the next two weeks, we'll meet via Zoom for 15-minute evening sessions every other day, to touch base with our starters. These brief yet informative coaching sessions will address any questions and ensure you're on the right track. You'll receive personalized guidance and support as your starter grows through two key phases:
    • Week 1: Focus on catching wild yeast and allowing the microbes to balance out.
    • Week 2: Building starter activity and strength to prepare for baking.

  • The science behind sourdough starters, including the role of yeast and bacteria.
  • How to choose the best flours for your starter.
  • Techniques for creating a healthy and robust starter from scratch.

Fun and Informative

This sourdough starter class has been a great experience. I wanted to learn how to make a bread that did not contain yeast. I learned the science behind making starter and was able to experiment on the side with the discarded bits of the starter. It was really impressive to see how we have all progressed through the last week on Teams calls. We were able to talk about our successes and challenges. Great way to learn. I am trying my hand at making a small loaf on day 9 of 14 for the starter journey. My starter just bloomed a little quicker than expected so I thought - why not try it. Keep you all posted.
